Over the years, I've become somewhat, well, comfortable with horror movies. I suspect it's because the recent crop has been totally crappy that I don't really get all that scared anymore. When you've seen one version of Scream, you've seen 'em all, I think. The last American horror movie that really, truly got under my skin was The Blair Witch Project, and that was ages ago.

Okay, so Gremlins and Child's Play also got under my skin to the extent that I can now no longer tolerate sharing my bedroom with dolls and Furbies, but I watched those when I was a very young, very impressionable child, hence they don't really count.

Which is why Splice has made me rather curious. The movie's concept looks pretty solid and interesting, and of course the "fright factor" is based on the possibility of the concept coming true in the near future - far more authentic than crazy serial killers going after horny teenagers, or prehistoric killer piranha invading a lake and killing everyone who jumps in the water. I still plan to watch it in full daylight, though, just to be safe.

For some odd reason, I take this to be a slap in the face to people who imagine that if they could just combine animal DNA with human DNA, they could come up with something out of anime or a fantasy novel. Or the Twilight Saga.

This movie, however, implies that the likelihood of that creation eating your brains is greater than aforementioned creation befriending or even falling in love with you. In truth, I rather like that idea.
